Help promote my music online

My approach to scales and modes.

With the exception of the pentatonic and blues scales, all of the scale shapes on this site are based around 3 note per string patterns. The reason for this is that using 3 note per string patterns and the economy picking technique is the most efficient way to play scales. The three note per string patterns also make it a hell of a lot easier to learn and memorise all of the positions of the major scale.

As for actual modal theory, there are plenty of sites on the web that will go a lot further into the details of it than this site does. I don't go into the details of "which mode should I play over this chord?", because (in my opinion) there will always be a number of answers to questions like these, and the only correct one is "which ever one gives you the sound that you want". Knowing a variety of scalar and modal patterns definitely gives you a lot more options, but if I was to say "over this chord you should play lydian, over that chord you should play phrygian", straight away we have ruled out several other options that may (or may not) have resulted in some interesting music.

In my opinion, it's better to simply learn the patterns and use them as different positions of the major scale at first. Then when confronted with something unusual, explore your options. Think about the notes in the chord (or progression), and then think about a mode that has similar notes. For example, in the song "Oceans", the song is mostly in A minor, but the guitar solo starts over an A# chord, so I needed to find a scale that was similar to A minor, but had an A# in it. I ended up using an A# Lydian, but no doubt there would have been several other scales that I could have used as well.

Use the lessons on this website to learn how to play the scales, then experiment with them and apply them your own way.
