Combining the different patterns. Now that we have learned the finger patterns for each position of the major scale, we will look at some ways to move through, or between each pattern. The guitar is a "3 dimensional" instrument, so it is important to know how to move from one end of the fretboard to the other, as well as just up and down the strings. The following exercise is based on the E Minor key, and covers virtually the entire fretboard using the D & G strings. As always, pick the black notes with a downstroke, and the red ones with an upstroke. For the notes with the blue circles, slide your hand up in to the next position and fret the note with the same finger as you used for the previous note.
